What is a seed press?

Screw presses for 50+ oilseeds - the heart of every oil mill

A seed press (screw press) presses oilseeds using mechanical pressure - without solvents, without heating. The result: native, cold-pressed oil with full flavor, maximum ingredients and a long shelf life. Ölwerk seed presses are designed for professional continuous operation: robust steel construction, easy maintenance, replaceable press heads.

Cold pressing — what that means

During cold pressing, the temperature of the oil is limited to a maximum of 27°C (EU Regulation 1169/2011). This protects heat-sensitive fatty acids, vitamins and flavors. Cold-pressed oil can be declared as “native cold-pressed” — a crucial marketing advantage in direct sales.

Max. pressing temperature: 27°C

Declaration: “natively cold-pressed”

Yield: 75–90% of the oil content

Who needs a seed press?

Farmers with their own rapeseed or flax cultivation, manufacturing companies for direct marketing, organic companies with Demeter or EU organic certification, loam mills for regional customers, cooking oil manufacturers and cosmetics companies with a need for special vegetable oils.

Typical entry: 5-30 kg/h

Professional operation: 50-200 kg/h

Industry: from 200 kg/h

Screw press vs. hydraulic press

Screw presses work continuously - ideal for continuous operation and consistent quality. Hydraulic presses (batch presses) achieve higher yields with very soft seeds (grape seed, argan), but are slower. Ölwerk screw presses are the standard technology for commercial manufactories and clay mills.

Operation: continuous

Throughput: constant & automatic

Cleaning: simple, CIP-capable

Technology & Structure

How a screw press works

The principle is simple - the execution determines quality, yield and maintenance effort. Ölwerk presses are designed for continuous operation in manufactories and contract mills.

Structure & functional principle

1
Feeding & preheating

The seeds are fed into the auger via a feeding funnel. Optional: electrical preheating (30–50°C) for better flowability for hard seeds such as pumpkin seeds.

2
Pressing in the screw

The press screw compacts the seeds progressively - the pressure increases from stage to stage. The oil comes out through the press basket and the press cake leaves the press at the end.

3
Pre-filtration & settling

The fresh oil contains turbidity and suspended particles. A pre-filter or a settling tank separates coarse particles - the basis for the subsequent fine filtration.

4
Fine filtration & bottling

Plate filters or membrane filters produce clear, long-lasting cooking oil. The connected filling station fills bottles or canisters in batches with a quantity counter.

Technical parameters

Press screw & press basket

Material: hardened steel (12.9). Press basket: perforated stainless steel cylinder with a gap width of 0.2–0.5 mm depending on the type of oil. Screw diameter: 45-120mm depending on the model. Interchangeable for different types of oil.

Drive & Control

Electric motor 0.75–11 kW depending on model. Speed control via frequency converter. Digital display for temperature and power. CE-compliant control cabinet. Optional: PLC control with batch documentation.

Cleaning & Maintenance

Dry cleaning between types: 20–30 min. CIP cleaning (cleaning-in-place) with full system. Maintenance interval: every 200-500 operating hours depending on seed hardness. Spare parts from stock, typical MTBF: >5,000 h.

ROI & profitability

What your own seed press brings economically.

The value of a seed press lies in the added value: instead of selling raw materials, you sell high-quality cooking oil. The price range between oilseed and finished cold-pressed oil is 5-15 times.

Value added ×5-15

Price range between oilseed and premium oil depending on the variety. Contract pressing for neighboring companies: 0.80–1.50 €/kg weight.

Rapeseed

Pumpkin
3.50 €/kg ⇒ 25-40 € oil (~10×)

Black cumin
5.00 €/kg ⇒ 15–25 € oil (~12×)

Amortization

Time until the system is fully amortized — depending on pressing capacity, contract pressing orders and direct marketing.

Press cake — bonus

The press cake (oil meal) contains 8-15% residual oil and is valuable animal feed or fertilizer. Additional additional revenue.

Seed press knowledge center

Seed presses — technology, seeds, economics.

A seed press is the key machine in every oil mill. Here you will find complete knowledge about screw presses, processes, seeds, pressure characteristics, yield and economic efficiency.

What is a seed press?

A seed press - in technical terms Screw press or Expeller — is a continuously operating press machine. A screw conveyor transports the seeds into a pressing chamber, which reduces the cross section through conical taper. Pressures of 800-1,500 bar blast the oil out of the oil cells. Press residue remains as press cake.

Designs

  • Stamp/hydraulic press: discontinuous, historical
  • Screw press (expeller): continuous, 5 kg/h to > 5 t/h — industry standard
  • Double screw press: high yield, larger investment
  • Pre-press + extraction: common with soy; oelwerk presses purely mechanically

Cold pressing in detail

When cold pressed, the outlet temperature remains below 40-60°C. Receives: Tocopherols (vitamin E), polyphenols, carotenoids, typical aroma of the variety. Yield 5–15% under hot pressing, but marketable as “native oil” with a high market price.

Seed preparation

  • Cleaning: Remove stones, stalks and dirt
  • Peel: Yield-increasing for sunflower and cocoa
  • Drying: Seed moisture 6–10%
  • Temperature control: if necessary 30–60 °C for better flow properties

Yield per seed

  • Rapeseed: 30–35 %
  • Peeled sunflower: 38–42 %
  • Linseed: 30–35 %
  • Hemp: 25–30 %
  • Pumpkin seed: 35–45 %
  • Sesame: 40–50 %
  • Walnut: 50–60 %

Press spindle & Normal wear and tear

The press spindle is the most wear-active component. Service life typically 10,000-20,000 operating hours. oelwerk offers interchangeable spindles for OW 100/400/500/510. Conical outlet nozzles can be exchanged for different seed dimensions.

Market Germany

Vegetable oil market Germany: approx. 4.3 million t annually; Rapeseed oil dominates > 60%. Direct marketers are growing: cold-pressed cooking oil achieves 8-20 €/liter, refined oil under 2 €/liter. UFOP counts around 800 decentralized oil mills in Germany.

Economic efficiency

1 kg of rapeseed (0.30 €) produces approx. 350 ml of cooking oil (3-6 €) and 650 g of press cake (0.30 €). Crude oil value: approx. 6-10x raw material value. Typically 50-500% higher added value for direct marketers.

Law & Certification

EU Regulation 178/2002 (Basic Food Law), 852/2004 (Hygiene), 1169/2011 (Labeling). For B2B often IFS Food or BRCGS mandatory. Organic according to EC Organic Regulation 2018/848. s-inox stainless steel is standard for CIP capability.

Maintenance

  • Daily cleaning of the press spindle
  • Weekly check of bearings/drives
  • Semi-annual press spindle check
  • Annual complete service (service contract available)

With good maintenance, machines last > 20 years.

Ecology

Mechanical pressing: 0.15–0.3 kWh per liter of oil. Solvent extraction: 1-2 kWh + hexane. Decentralized cold pressing is one of the most ecologically efficient forms of oil processing.
